While trying out some of these tricks with the Option key, I found I just could not make the upside down exclamation point nor could I make the em-dash. I was doing these experiments in TextEdit and discovered that I had to switch from plain text mode to rich text mode. After that all the option key bits worked as described.

For people migrating from the Linux/Windows world - most of whom used a thing called US International Keyboard layout - there is an easier alternative that doesn't involve relearning how to type...

http://www.brockerhoff.net/usi/

That is a keyboard mapping for Mac OS X that emulates the windows keyboard layout. It works very well and I did not have to learn new key combinations to write the funny characters of my mother tongue. :-)

Of course, after writing this all up, installing WordPress, and porting the content over to my new blog, I found a few existing links that already explained this fairly decently, like this one.

But I still think the effort was worthwhile; mine is more current, and shows how to use the keyboard viewer too. And now I have a blog!
